Meet your Doula Facilitators:

Jai Fields- Doula and Community Birth Worker

Jai (she/they) is a Black, queer, muva, educator, advocate, nature enthusiast and full spectrum doula envisioning futures and pathways forward rooted in Black imagination; while centering radical pleasure, community care and love. Their work as a doula is to guide folks in shifting the way they think about birth, loss, sex, and wellness by replacing shame with empowerment, through education and exploration. Jai is an advocate for finding pleasure through play and rest, and her “secret” agenda is to bring wellness to the community by creating affirming and supportive spaces for people to thrive.

Maria Lopez- Full Spectrum Doula

I was born in Durango, Dgo. Mexico, but have spent the past 24 years of my life living in Austin,Texas. I had the hope of continuing my career as an accountant when I came to the United States, but I had to steer away from my career and become a full time mom. Having left my friends and family in Mexico I was looking for support during my pregnancy which led me to an organization called Family Connections. As an immigrant during my pregnancy I wasn't experienced with the pregnancy process in the United States. This organization offered me classes and training on parenting skills. I was also able to learn about my rights not only as a mother but as a person throughout my time with this organization. I went into my birth knowing what I expected out of it and what I would allow to be done to my own body because no one else will fight harder for you than yourself. After my birth, I started out my career with Family Connections by volunteering, and then later started working in their Child Care program. From the knowledge and experience I gained by working there I then became a self employed nanny for many years. Being a nanny helped me find my passion for babies and mothers.

After my time as a nanny I found Mama Sana where I volunteered and worked for them in their Child Care Program. In 2017 I had the opportunity to do my Birth Companion (Doula) Certification with Mama Sana. From there in 2019 I started working as a Birth Companion with Mama Sana and I have enjoyed every second of it. During my time as a Birth Companion I am aware that not one experience is the same which is why I will always tend to one's unique needs. I believe no one knows their own body better than themselves. I allow the mothers I work with to confide in their intuition in order to create a birth surrounded by positivity, respect, and support. I also utilize my expertise in Reiki, Vibration and Sound Therapy, Aromatherapy, and Tapping techniques with the mothers I work with.
